We are sad to share the news that former Middlesex faculty member Henry Emile “Mike” Erhard, 89, of Castine, Maine, passed away on June 1, 2013 . Mike graduated from Noble and Greenough School in 1942 and Harvard University in 1946. He served his country as a captain and pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and later flying dignitaries around the world conducting post war business.
Following the war, he finished his degree at Harvard and pursued a master's degree in language at Middlebury College. Beginning in 1950, he taught French at Middlesex for 30 years before retiring to Castine. Mike lived his life making the most of every day. The life of a school master allowed him to pursue his interests and impart his knowledge on future generations whether it be the classroom, the dormitory, the ice rink or on the pond.
He rowed at Nobles and Harvard and spent 30 years coaching crew at Middlesex. In honor of the Erhards, the Henry and Sallie Erhard Crew Bowl is presented annually to the member of the Middlesex Girls' Varsity Crew who, in the opinion of her teammates and coaches, has displayed the greatest spirit and dedication.
He is survived by his four children, Hope McNally and her husband John of Hudson, Ohio, Lincoln and his wife Kerrin (nee Cheever) of Boothbay, Henry and his wife Laurie (nee Snow) of Castine, and Paul and his wife Susan Tomases of Hamilton, Mass.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A service will be held at noon on Saturday, June 15 at Our Lady of Holy Hope Catholic Church in Castine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to AT HOME/Downeast, P.O. Box 1107 Blue Hill, ME 04614.
