On June 1st and 2nd two Middlesex alumni, Diego Armando Maquieira ’09 and Neil Greene ’10 will be competing in the 2013 Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) tournament in Philadelphia, PA. The CRC is the highest profile college rugby competition in the United States and has served as a platform for many future Olympians. Held at PPL Park, the tournament has established an impressive fanbase since its inaugural season in 2010 and with the addition of rugby to the 2009 summer Olympics.
Diego from Northeastern University will be a first time competitor at the CRC’s. During his tenure at Middlesex, he played football for the Zebras and later bought his talents to Bucknell University before transferring to Northeastern. While at Northeastern, Diego helped start a men’s rugby program and is currently the Vice President and co-captain of the team.
After graduating from Middlesex in 2010, Neil began his rugby career at Dartmouth College where the Big Green won the CRC’s back-to-back in 2011 and 2012. Neil was also a member of the football team at Middlesex and coincidentally plays the same positions on the rugby field as Diego, prop and flanker. For his outstanding play and leadership, Neil was elected co-captain for his final season wearing a Dartmouth jersey.
